Personnel Biographies

Alex Berman, M.S.M.E., P.E.

Alex has over 20 years experience fossil power plant performance engineering.  Approximately half of this time was spent with the Lithuanian Power Authority.  Alex spent eight years as a member of the Performance Engineering Group at the Southern California Edison Co. (SCE).  During this time he has performed dozens of tests on equipment such as steam turbines, gas turbines, hydroelectric turbines, boilers, large pumps, condensers, feedwater heaters, fans, and blowers.  Alex is one of the few engineers in the U.S. with intimate knowledge of the dye-dilution method for measuring large liquid flows.  He has also preformed many steam path audits all over the U.S. and in Latin America .  He is a registered Professional Engineer in California .

O.Jay Cassellius

O.Jay has over 20 years experience as a technician in process industries including oil field service, refinery turn-arounds and rebuilds, and power plant instrumentation.  O.Jay spent eight years as a member of the Performance Engineering Group at  Southern California Edison Co. (SCE).  During this time he developed and implemented the instrumentation package, maintenance, and procedures necessary for rapid on-site deployment.  He has extensive knowledge in many types of industrial instrumentation including gas chromatographs, flow computers, and high-precision wattmeters.  He has also written many of the data collection programs for our instrumentation interface.  O. Jay is one of the few technicians in the country thoroughly familiar with the dye-dilution method of measuring large flows.

Sam Gibson, P.E.

Sam has over 20 years of experience in the power industry.  This experience includes design of nuclear plant components, station performance engineering, and most recently, turbine steam path audits.  As a staff engineer with SCE he performed over 80 steam path audits on SCE units as well as plants all over the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.   Sam helped in the development of the Steam Thermal Performance Evaluation (STPE) turbine modeling software program with Encotech, Inc.  Recently Sam developed a complete turbine modeling and steam path audit program using MS Excel.  He is a registered Professional Engineer in California .

Kevin Weeks, M.S.M.E., P.E.

Kevin has over 14 years experience in the power industry.  As a station engineer he completed reliability and betterment projects on many different types of power plant equipment.  He was also a performance engineer responsible for the thermal performance of a 2,000 MW gas-fired plant.  As a member of the SCE’s Performance Engineering Group he conducted many tests on conventional gas-fired and waste-to-energy units as well as gas turbines.  Kevin is familiar with the dye-dilution method for measuring large flows and has completed several steam path audits.  Recently Kevin completed a Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering with turbine steam path audits as the subject of his thesis.  He is a registered Professional Engineer in California.
